When I see the words 'kitchen' and 'organised' I jump to attention, so this morning when the very accomplished blogger, mother, builder extraordinaire, A-M, at The House That A-M Built sent me to check out Martha's kitchen hints I hopped straight over. Quite apart from Martha's incredible array of pots and spatulas (and obsessive neatness) this is what really got me excited.
Adjustable shelves built with old fashioned 'bird's beak' supports - and as Martha - or more accurately her minions who write all this - say there are no holes and no hardware.
I HATE those holes. And those stupid plugs that fall out of them. So much so that when I saw this a few months ago on the DIY blog Young House Love I saved it.

My dream kitchen (in the dream house) will have bird's beak shelving. Some clever carpenter type suggested they might be dust catchers. I choose dust, and my dream kitchen comes with a dream cleaner anyway.
For now, it is me, those darn holes and a bucket of filler.

I haven't a hope here in Brissie... it was hard enough just getting my house frame up... sigh! .... it will be different next time...I think I might make a 'next time bird's beak pact' with you too! ReplyDeleteWow Ann, I've never seen shelf supports like that. They are genius, and so graphic and stylish...and, well you know! Thanks for enlightening me. If it wasn't raining so much I'd have to go out and buy some filler for my Ikea bookshelves :)

What a gorgeous design! I hadn't seen this before so thanks for sharing. Although I have an aversion to anything that catches dust - I would have to choose dust where these glorious shelves are concerned. Great idea to fill in the holes too.

I choose the dust over the holes too! Trust Martha to have the perfect solution for adjustable and still attractive shelves. I can't see my husband getting quite so excited about them though when the quotes would come in. Shame!

I just bought something similar made by Woodcraft and available through Amazon (less than $50 incl. shipping). It has uprights cut in a sawtooth pattern but they don't extend all the way across, just one in each corner. It's not as elegant but would collect less dust. I wanted something for an old farm cupboard that i am refinishing. The one I bought is called a sawtooth shelf system. www.sawtoothshelfsystem.com. If you want to make one, visit the lumberjocks web site for a video but I gather the machinery needed is expensive.
