Farewell to summer...

Summer is well and truly done. Melbourne has been blessed by a lingering Indian summer which left us this week. The boys were swimming last weekend, now we're in winter mode.

Funny how weather dominates our conversations in all corners of the world.  I find the obsession a little tiring sometimes particularly the competitive conversations - 'hot, you don't know hot' or 'freezing? I used to walk five miles to school in the snow.' Yet here I am talking about it too.

I'm always surprised by people who don't love summer. How can you not? I want to shake them and shout a little but I know that's frowned upon in modern times. Particularly when the summer-hater is the check out chick at K-Mart. I think they'd probably call security.

I can't revel in Autumn. All that orange and brown... not my best colours.

I like Autumn when the weather's still warm. Crisp mornings and 27 degree days. And when I say crisp I mean T-shirts for school drop off at a quarter to nine.

I like Autumn when I see it in pictures on blogs from the northern hemisphere - far far from me.

Melbourne may well be the wrong place for me. But hell, I'm not moving again.

I think I might just have to stock up on the funereal Melbourne uniform of black and more black, don myself head to toe in mourning gear,  keep my head down and the heater on until the worst of it has passed.

Bring on Spring.

  1. You make me giggle, Ann. My grandmother only ever referred to black as 'funereal' and I think I only started to wear it after she's died! You can tell I didn't grow up in Melbourne ☺. J x

  2. i think you are so brave living in Melbourne! i too am a total Summer lover, and just grit my teeth through Winter- and Winter is only about 5 weeks long here in Brisbane! you may be wearing lots of black, but you can add some colour by adding a huge big colourful scarf! I have 2 drawers full of them and wear one everyday for the 3 coldest months of the year! Kate x

I love Spring and Autumn when the nights are cool enough to snuggle under the doona and the days warm enough for shorts and t-shirts!!!!
Have to admit that this Autumn has taken a turn for the worse though as the sun seems to have run away!! xx

  4. I am sooooo with you!!! I'm still waiting for summer to start here in Sydney and now apparently it's Autumn. What's with that???? I really can't find anything at all to like about the cooler months - and as one of those mums whose mantra is "If I'm cold, then everyone is cold" life becomes a constant struggle to get my 3 boys to wear something other than shorts and t-shirts when it's only 13degrees outside!!!!

    1. Just remember that if you think it's cold in Sydney - it's colder here!! I have a three year old who refuses to sleep under a blanket... not sure how he's going to go in July!
