Calm...

My head has been too full to write in the past week... too full I think of the awful tragedy in Christchurch.  We are all glued to the news with the slightly unreal feeling that it really must be unfolding somewhere very far from here.

Normal life goes on for most of us and that vague sense of guilt that goes with it. In our house our heads are very full of the sort of cross-roads-of-life stuff that comes around all too frequently in the lives of serial movers. Do we stay or go or stay a little longer and then go or just never go or should we never have come at all?!  I am channelling calm as you can see by the picture above.

I am also trying to pin down my children in the search for one of my rings that has mysteriously disappeared off a high shelf in the kitchen. Two year olds are not reliable sources. He has sent me rifling through the lego box and into the vegetable drawer of the fridge.

Driving across Auckland's bridge an hour ago I was daydreaming about inventing a diamond detector (so handy) and then saw the flags at half mast overhead.  That brought me right back to the real world.

  1. So understand what's going on in your head. You still need to attend to your own family, no matter what's going on in the world. I suppose there is some truth to that poster "keep calm and carry on".

  2. Perfectly written Ann. It's the same here in Wellington - the guilt doesn't go away either. It seems surreal until something jolts you back to the fact that it is real.
We need some good news stories!
    But please don't go....

  3. I know just what you mean. It's very surreal, sometimes it's just too much and I have to turn away. Then I feel guilty. It's just so heartbreaking.

I hope you find your ring.

  4. Yes Ann, us Aussies with a kiwi connection feel just the same. I could put your feelings down to survivors guilt, but that would be dismissing a true & deep felt emotion. Go & rifle through your kitchen trash bin, that's where MOTH located my diamonds after a frantic, explosive, accusatory & fruitless 2 hours of upending the rest of the house - good luck.

  5. I know what you mean as well. I feel guilty for laughing with my daughter this afternoon. And then I remember that the world needs laughter especially now and I feel 1% better.

I hope you find your ring. Have you looked in the two year olds pocket. Thats we found mine many moons ago!

  7. We are serial movers as well, and those very thoughts are going through our heads at the moment too. We were planning on moving to a new house 10 minutes away for 2 years, then up to Auckland for keeps - all this before the earthquake struck last week. Now we're thinking of fast-tracking the Auckland plan - but we love our school! Oh - don't I know the torment of big decisions like that!
We feel even more guilt down here in North Canterbury where we have no house damage and our schools reopened today.
    Hope you find your ring.

  8. Hi Ann,
Although I live far away, Australia and New Zealand I'm very fond of, so seeing all the heartache that is happening lately is something I think of alot.
    Like reading your blog!
And I posted something positive perhaps it will makes someone smile.
Hope you have a good day,
    Maureen x

  9. I hope you found the missing diamond...and you find the answers to moving too. I understand (and sadly) know those questions too well. We have been asking them over the past few months too. Will probably move again soon. I'd love it to be the last one?! I'm glad you are all OK after the 'quake...what a terrible happening. Can't begin to imagine, nor imagine how it must be for you living there. Hugs to you. Emma.
